Amazing Events in Residence

November 12 was an amazing day. There was amazing weather, which consisted of the warm sun plus a gentle breeze, and there was an amazing event, which took place all over campus. The event, which started outside the Fieldhouse, was the Amazing Race, an event organized and directed by the Lakehead University Residence VP Committee. Based on the television series, the Amazing Race consisted of groups of students competing in various challenges with the goal of finishing faster than other groups.
The challenges were mostly team-focused, requiring trust between teammates. Some of the challenges included untangling a human knot, ‘shaving’ and dressing a teammate, two teammates simultaneously licking Cheez Whiz from a balloon that the other is holding, and navigating a chalk course blindfolded with the help from a teammate. The Amazing Race tested each team’s knowledge of their way around campus by sending them all over the place. Some of the locations included the Agora, the Avila Gym, by the river, outside the library, and Residence’s tennis courts. After all the challenges were completed, teams raced back to the Fieldhouse.
Marty Johnston, President of Lakehead University Residence Council and Chair of Residence’s VP Committee, overcame Murphy’s law, an adage stating “anything that can go wrong will go wrong.” The weather was arguably the best we’ve seen this month, plus everything ran smoothly from start to finish. With the help of many dedicated volunteers, Marty and the VPs did an amazing job in organizing and executing the Amazing Race.
Lakehead University Residence Life runs many events like this throughout the year. In late October, Residence held an event called Minute to Win It. Based on the popular television gameshow, students were selected by ballot to participate in individual challenges. Students winning one challenge would win a prize for themselves and move on to a second challenge. Two successful challenges would result in a prize for their entire house and a third challenge with the chance to win everyone in the audience a prize.
The challenges included Caddy Stack, Face the Cookie, Get Forked, Hanky Panky, Ka-Broom, Stick the Landing, Tilt-A-Cup and many more. All challenges came with a time limit of 60 seconds, of which each second counts. In the case of the Tipsy challenge, where a student had to drink from and balance 3 soda cans on their beveled edges, he won on the last second. Many other students showed us what they’re capable of and won themselves, and their houses, over $1000 in prizes.
From altruistic events such as the Terry Fox Run and Ditch Clean Up to prize-filled events such as Minute to Win it and the Amazing Race, this semester has been packed with amazing events made for Residence students. But the fun doesn’t stop here, there are many events happening next semester too!

Ditch Clean Up Pays

James Barneveld and Mark Mitro from Shabaqua

Earlier this month, on October 2nd, we held our annual Ditch Clean Up event, which we have done since 1994. The Planeteers Committee, a committee where students can get involved with environmental issues, are the ones who organize and run this event with the help of several Res Life members. Any Residence students outside of the committee are welcome and encouraged to participate in Ditch Clean Up.
Ditch Clean Up consists of a bus full of Residence students who pick up recyclables and garbage from our 5 kilometers of adopted highway length. This year, approximately 45 students collected a total of 12 bags of recyclables as well as 40 bags of garbage from the highway ditches. In addition to the busload of students who cleaned up the ditches of our adopted length of highway, approximately 30 students collected additional recyclables and garbage from around campus and the community.
Ditch Clean Up pays in many ways. It’s a great way to get involved in Residence and explore the highway, our campus and our community. It’s a great event to participate in if you love the environment. After picking up all those recyclables/garbage and putting them where they belong, you feel good about yourself. It’s a way for us to make our mark positively on the environment. Not only does Ditch Clean Up pay intrinsically, but it sometimes can also pay extrinsically. This year, one of the small groups of students found a five dollar bill in their designated section of the highway ditch. Though the intrinsic payment of Ditch Clean Up is great, finding a five dollar bill is pretty sweet too.

Residence Made It's Mark on September!

Make Your Mark is a slogan new to Residence this year.  The philosophy behind it is to show students that they can be anyone they want to be in university and in Residence.  Majority of Residence students come from far away cities, provinces and other countries, and, with that, comes the ability to explore themselves and be who they really want to be-- themselves.

Residence gives students the opportunity to make new friends and get involved with the community.  We do this by offering various Residence committees and programming many fun events throughout the year, where students can make their mark.  However, it's not only Residence students who made their mark.  The Residence Life team, a group of individuals dedicated to making a difference, certainly made their mark this month.  Whether they programmed a fun house event, made house meetings fun, or even got waxed to raise money for the Terry Fox Run, the Residence Life team has also made their mark on September.

During Orientation week, Residence left a huge mark on the The Biggest Event Ever, Monte Carlo Night, and Residence Mini Olympics.  For just having moved in that day, students did a great job at The Biggest Event Ever.  The fun didn't stop there, nor did it stop at Monte Carlo Night, a semi formal night of poker, roulette, bingo, black jack, horse racing, cotton candy and much more, plus lots of awesome prizes.  On the last day of Orientation week, Residence really made their mark with Mini Olympics, a series of challenges where houses would compete against one another.  From face paint to capes and matching shirts to flags, every house showed their spirit in some way.

Since then, Residence has participated in the Terry Fox run, where we doubled our goal of $1 per student living in Residence, making it the most we've ever raised for Terry Fox.  It's intense how much money a house can raise with their HP and RA volunteer to dye their hair, wax their chest and legs, and not speak for a day.  Geraldton house definitely made a mark there.

To finish off September, houses competed against one another at Fall Fest, an event full of sports, carnivals activities, food and lots more fun.  Whether students were playing road hockey, jumping in the bouncy castle, or writing how awesome their house is with chalk on the road, they definitely left a mark on September.  With the mark they've left, it's hard to believe that Residence students moved in just last month.

Check out the photos below to see if we caught you making your mark.
